I’ve enjoyed living and working in Platte County since 1988, and will be dedicated to creating a culture of respect of our taxpayers. When citizens call our office, they will be given complete information on their valuations, the process, and how to appeal them to a taxpayer-friendly Board of Equalization.
As commissioner, I am spearheading the implementation of Senate Bill 190 in Platte County, which freezes the amount senior citizens pay in property taxes, giving them much-needed tax relief. Passage of the ordinance is expected to be effective early 2024.
If elected, my priority will be to restore respectful treatment to all who reach out to the Assessor’s Office. I have a proven record of fighting for Platte County taxpayers. When I noticed that several homeowners were given only the weekend to appeal their valuation increases, I lobbied our state legislature to give them more time. There is now a state law requiring at least a month’s notice.
Some of my other accomplishments in office have been:
- Appointed a taxpayer-friendly Board of Equalization to hear homeowners’ valuation appeals
- Won a court case protecting county taxpayers from paying a $20-40 million bond shortfall
- Supported increased law enforcement funding
- Worked to educate voters, and with their approval, realigned a 1/2 cent sales tax to support both parks and law enforcement with no tax increase
- Worked to educate voters, and with their approval, decreased roads sales tax, while protecting Platte County municipalities’ and road districts’ share of funding
